These are stillwater trout flies we tend to use for stillwater flyfishing, and times they are effective :  

1. Chironomids:  all season
2. Bloodworms:  all season
3. Leeches:  all season
4. Mayflies:  May - July
5. Sedge/Caddis:  June - August
6. Damsels:  all season
7. Dragonflies:  all season
8. Shrimp:  all season
9. Waterboatmen:  Sept/October

Other search patterns such as the Carey and Doc Spratley can be effective, but many of the above 9 patterns are also good search patterns if gently worked near the bottom.  For rivers, count on stoneflies (salmon fly and golden stone, eg: box canyon & sofa pillow), Irresistibles, and egg patterns to do the trick.
